The Art Chapel is a welcoming, creative studio where adults can discover and grow their artistic abilities through affordable art and craft instruction. Engaged with Lincoln’s South Downtown community, an economically challenged area with limited cultural resources, the Art Chapel hosts gallery exhibitions and public arts events to enrich the neighborhood. Housed in Lincoln’s first church building, the once-neglected space has been revitalized into a meaningful asset for a community in need. The most striking new addition is a large rolling wall that opens the Art Chapel to the community—both in a physical and symbolic sense. This movable wall was created by cutting into the existing exterior façade, retaining the original door and window. Inside, the primary space serves as a flexible room for art classes and exhibitions. At the back of this area, a new plywood wall echoes the shape and rhythm of the street-facing elevation when the rolling wall is open.
